I know that having a church based lifestyle is not right for everyone, but for me it works. Where I attend there is such a family community, one that gives me strength when I am down. It also gives me a chance to reaffirm my committments each week and is a good way just to get me back on track in so many aspects of my life when I have slid off course.

Do you find that this has been a place for me to make the real connections which help get you through trying personal issues such as this? I have never though of church as a great support system for weight loss goals but I know that there are some great programs which revolve around church and are helping many with their goals. Are you or anyone else familiar with these? I just posted this question in another section but saw this post so I thought I would pose it here too.

First Place is an older but wonderfully productive program I did a couple of years ago. I'm sure other denominations have them too (Baptist here). I enjoyed the bond between church members.

It sounds like a "taking care of the temple" approach. I like that. Gluttony and sloth are both listed as deadly sins. How true!!!!!!!!

Has anyone heard of any other church/spiritual based fitness programs besides the First Place? I'm interested in starting up something at my church. We had a great program last year with Sam Varner.

I recommend the book!

I think i need to really tune in my body and spirit. seems they are two different things with two different goals. I need to come "together" and treat my body like the temple that it is. I'll look into my church and see if there is any programs available like the ones you guys were discussing. sounds like that is just what i'm looking for

I think there are many who are having a lot of success with these types of programs so I am going to look into that myself. I know that many churches offer Weight Watchers meetings but I am looking for something that can feed the soul too if you know what I mean! :)

Isn't this an uplifting topic? You guys really need to check out that Sam Varner book. I've read it too, but didn't have a class with him in person. I esepcially like the diaphramatic breathing technigues. Talk about a stress reliever!

Your Body is your Temple of God

1 Cor. 6:19-20 "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body," (1 Cor. 6:19-20).

I always try to think of this when I think I want something really greasy and fat-laden! Guilt isn't always a bad thing!
